Heroes Realm

Heroes Realm is a project I helped create at Goodgame Studios in 2016 working as a Junior Technical Artist. This was my first job in the games industry and required me to use all the knowledge I'd earned previously in 3dsmax to help out with rigging, animation and art tasks. All rigs were done using the CAT rig and I needed to produce a variety of styles for many different character types to realize the vision of the artists and get the heroes ready to be animated. I greatly enjoyed this project and learned a lot of new skills to help improve my employability which I hope I can transfer into new works in the future.

Companion Cavalry

This is a personal project i've been working on in my spare time and is a quick animation demo, showing my skills as a character animator. Currently a work in progress, this short video shows several loops i've created for both a horse and rider. Inspired by Rome 2 Total War, the character is an ancient greek bodyguard for Alexander the Great. I developed it using Photoshop, 3dsmax, Zbrush and After Effects. For more details of how the project was developed please take a look at my blog.

Pygmy Panic

Pygmy Panic is a game I helped make at the Dare to be Digital competition 2013. For this project I worked as the character animator, producing concept art, modelling, rigging and animating the characters ready to be put in game. The game is an augmented reality, hoarde game for kids aged 8 to 12 where the main objective is to shoot the brute characters and defend the pygmy. The game was made using Unity, 3dsmax and Photoshop.

Clockwork

Clockwork is a game I helped to create at university. It is a Steampunk, 3D Platformer that we made in the Unity engine with Xbox 360 controls. I was the team lead for this role and I had a large amount of input on the games design and organisation.  Jobs that I helped out with was the design document and gameplay mechanics, level design and UI. I liked to plan everything out in 2D and figure out the logic of the game before working with artists and programmers to create assets.

Motion Capture for Games

A blended animation on a 3dsmax biped showing various loops produced for the Motion Capture for Games module at Teesside University.
This was the first project I had undertaken using motion capture and I needed to observe standard industry procedures including, planning, scheduling, rehearsing and health and safety whilst preparing for the shoot. The motion was cleaned using Cortex and applied to the biped rig in Motion Builder. These animations would be suitable for a game character in a 3rd person RPG game involving pie throwing.

Character Rigging

For the journeyman project I worked as a character rigger providing game ready character rigs to the animators to streamline their jobs. This involved a lot of problem solving and testing in order to make sure the rigs worked in the UDK engine but also provided the simple controls to achieve body and facial animation. This showreel demonstrates two of the more complex rigs I had to make, including a facial rig for a jester character, and a custom rig for the more dynamic worm boss character.

Earth To - Freeform Animation

Earth To is a freeform animation featuring an audio clip from the film Zoolander. It was my task to plan out and produce an animated short in time with the audio using two character models. This involved rigging and skinning the characters using the biped rig in 3dsmax, as well as blocking out a basic scene with materials and lighting. The final animation is a 30 second animated short that observes traditional animation skills and the principles of animation.

Space Elevator - Cut Sequence Design

The final animatic from the Cut Sequence Design module at Teesside University. It features a squad of marines as they escort the president of the planetary council to safety using the orbital tether, (Space Elevator). The goal of the project was to create a dramatic visual cut scene that explored many principles used in storyboarding and to develop my drawing skills. I used a mixture of traditional and digital painting to create the panels and basic 2d animations were applied using Flash to make the story as clear as possible. Sound effects were downloaded from various sources off the internet and mixed using Cubase
